What works in Pinegrow Desktop and in Pinegrow Online in the browser, what is only in Pinegrow Desktop, and how to move a project between them.
Pinegrow Desktop and Pinegrow Online
Pinegrow Desktop is the app you install on your computer. Pinegrow Online runs Pinegrow in your web browser. Most editing tools work the same in both. This page collects the differences that the feature pages describe, and shows how to move a project from one to the other.
Available in both
- Checks and content: Content Workspace, Spell Check, Page Health, Accessibility checks and SVG controls, all new in Pinegrow 10.
- Tailwind Visual Editor: the visual controls, the Class Tree inspector, styles, the Design panel and its built-in compiler, Floating Tools, Tailwind Blocks, the helpers and the conversion from Tailwind CSS 3 to 4.
- AI Assistant: AI CSS editing in the Smart HTML edit action, and choosing the framework before AI Assistant builds a new project.
- Publishing to GitHub, Netlify and Cloudflare Pages. See Publish your website.
- Project revisions. Projects in Pinegrow Online also have a Revisions tab. See Visual change review and revisions.
Only in Pinegrow Desktop
- Publishing over SFTP.
- An external Tailwind CSS build, for example with npm or the Tailwind CLI.
- Review AI changes.
- The OpenAI Codex provider.
- Local voice transcription on your computer. Pinegrow Online can only use a provider for transcription.
- The local MCP server. In Pinegrow Online, external AI agents connect through WebMCP. See Connect external AI agents.
- The Site map view.
- Restoring individual elements with Apply restorations in visual change review.
- The restart test and Configure CMS Mode… in Content Workspace.
- The Pinegrow Data folder and protected credentials.
- The getting started guide and the playground projects of Pinegrow 10.1. See the Pinegrow 10.1 release notes.
Move a project between Desktop and Online
Pinegrow Desktop 10 can connect a project on your computer to a project in Pinegrow Online. Sync is explicit: you decide when to send Desktop changes to Online and when to bring Online changes into Desktop, and Pinegrow shows you what will change before any files move. It is not real-time collaboration. Only one editing session can change a connected project at a time. See Sync projects between Pinegrow Desktop and Pinegrow Online.
Pinegrow Online can also open a folder on your computer. In that case it edits the files on your computer directly, and there is nothing to sync. See Working with local projects.
Hosting
Pinegrow Online stores your projects in the cloud, but it is not a website hosting service. To make a site public, publish it to GitHub, Netlify or Cloudflare Pages.
